Steve Beshuk is the Principal Consultant at Benefactor Group. He has a passion for helping nonprofits achieve data-driven results. This includes improving internal systems and building strategic plans. His expertise was cultivated over decades of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector and lies in strategic planning, coaching, business intelligence, technology, and data-informed decision-making.

Before joining Benefactor Group, Steve led professional services at a national technology consulting firm that focused on nonprofits—from major universities to grassroots organizations. His leadership shined bright as he led a team of consultants helping nonprofits optimize their people, data, and systems to raise more money and better serve their constituents.

Steve has devoted his professional life to the nonprofit sector: earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at national, chapter-based charities, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Junior Achievement, and the American Red Cross. He has front-line experience in every facet of nonprofit management.

What attracted you to Allovance?

There were a few things. The first: reducing the subjectivity of decision-making. I’ve worked with nonprofits for decades. All too often, I’ve seen organizations make strategic decisions based on instinct alone. Instincts are great, but they should be an ingredient, not the whole cake. With Allovance, the decision-making process is broken down: transformed into smaller, discrete decisions that roll up to reveal the larger strategic direction. It removes bias – it’s hard to game it!

Second: the quantification of strategy. At the end of the process, you can actually score the strategic value of potential projects.

Third, the cohesive software platform. The entire process is contained in a single application. 

And finally, the certification process to become a decision coach. It is helpful to understand the science that undergirds the method.

How did you first hear about Allovance?

I found Allovance while conducting research online. Allovance was mentioned in a forum and, being curious about all things strategic planning and data, I checked it out.

How do you use Allovance with your clients?

It elevates our strategic planning services. We follow a 4-step process: Discovery, Dream, Design, and Deliver. Allovance put our Design step—which is focused on transforming all the information gathered into strategic priorities, objectives and measures—on steroids.

How has using Allovance software impacted consulting interactions and outcomes?

It has deepened and enhanced our method, providing tools to ensure truly “data-informed decision-making.” It has enabled us to take on projects that in the past we may not have been able to do.

What Allovance feature do you most love?

The Compare step. It requires our clients to think about what decision criteria is most valuable. This is not a muscle they are used to using.

What is one thing you have changed about your work after going through the Coach Certification?

Understanding the role of bias in decision-making. If you are not aware of it, it’s unavoidable.

Can you share a memorable success story or a challenging project where Allovance played a key role?

I don’t have a specific story to share, but I have had a recurring experience. By the midpoint of a strategic planning project, clients can become a little fatigued—our process is thorough; it requires organizations to assess their strategy in deeper ways than they may be used to. But then—towards the end—there is this “Aha!” moment where they see it all come together. Where they recognize that this process was different…elevated.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and cooking.
